DIRTYBARS INSTALLATION GUIDE.
Estimated Installation Time: 3–4 Hours
DirtyBars are designed to be as straightforward as possible to install using factory mounting points and our semi plug-and-play wiring harness.
Step 1 – Prepare the vehicle
Park the vehicle on a level surface and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Lay out all supplied components and compare them with the parts list before beginning installation.
Step 2 – Remove factory side steps
If fitted, remove the factory side steps and any brackets attached to the vehicle.
Clean the mounting surfaces to ensure the new brackets sit flush against the body.
Step 3 – Install the mounting brackets
Attach the supplied reinforced iron mounting brackets using the factory mounting locations.
Do not fully tighten the hardware at this stage, allowing for minor adjustment once the side steps are fitted.
Step 4 – Fit the DirtyBars
Lift each DirtyBars assembly onto the mounting brackets.
Install all mounting bolts and align the steps so they sit level with the vehicle.
Once aligned, tighten all hardware to the recommended torque.
Step 5 – Install the motors
Mount the electric motors to each side step assembly as shown in the installation video.
Ensure each motor is fully seated and the drive mechanism rotates freely without binding.
Step 6 – Route the wiring harness
Run the supplied wiring harness along the chassis/body following existing factory wiring where possible.
Secure the harness using the supplied cable ties while keeping it clear of:
- Exhaust components
- Moving suspension parts
- Steering components
- Sharp edges
Step 7 – Install the ECU
Mount the Smart ECU inside the engine bay in a dry, protected location.
Ensure all connectors are easily accessible before securing the ECU.
Step 8 – Connect power
Connect the positive power cable to the battery positive terminal.
Connect the earth cable to a suitable chassis grounding point.
Reconnect the negative battery terminal once all wiring is complete.
Step 9 – Connect the door trigger harness
Connect the supplied trigger harness to the vehicle's door sensor wiring as outlined for your specific model.
This allows the side steps to automatically deploy when a door is opened and retract once all doors are closed.
Step 10 – Connect the motors
Plug each motor into the corresponding ECU connectors.
Check that all electrical connectors are fully locked into place before testing.
Step 11 – Test the system
Open each door individually and confirm:
- Side steps deploy smoothly
- Side steps retract completely
- Motors operate quietly
- No wiring interferes with moving components
Step 12 – Final adjustments
If required, slightly loosen the mounting hardware and adjust the position of the steps until the gaps are even on both sides of the vehicle.
Retighten all mounting hardware once satisfied.
Step 13 – Secure all wiring
Secure any remaining loose wiring using cable ties.
Double-check that no wiring can rub, stretch or contact hot or moving components.
Step 14 – Final inspection
Before driving the vehicle:
- Confirm all bolts are fully tightened
- Check all electrical connections
- Verify the anti-pinch function operates correctly
- Confirm the manual override button functions correctly
- Perform several open/close cycles to ensure smooth operation
Installation Complete
Your DirtyBars Electric Retractable Side Steps are now installed and ready for use.
The system will automatically deploy when a door is opened and retract once all doors are closed, providing improved accessibility while maintaining maximum ground clearance when not in use.
